Migrating from Lightspeed
Lightspeed is not one product. Before you export, you need to know which Lightspeed you are on, because the export process is very different between them.
First, identify your product
Lightspeed Retail ships as X-Series (formerly Vend) and R-Series (formerly the legacy Retail product). Their gift card exports work differently, so follow the section that matches your product. There is also a separate L-Series (Restaurant) product, which is different again.
If you are not sure which you have, check your login screen or your billing. X-Series and R-Series use different admin interfaces.
Deactivate first
Whichever product you are on, freeze or deactivate your gift cards in Lightspeed before you export, so a customer cannot spend the same balance in both Lightspeed and Shopify. Export at the moment of cutover. See the migration hub for the full reasoning.
X-Series: the clean self-serve export
X-Series has a complete, self-serve gift card export:
- Go to Reporting > Gift card reports.
- Choose Export report.
- Pick your destination and save.
The export file includes gift card codes, creation and usage dates, balances, statuses, IDs, and recipient emails. This is everything you need for a migration.
R-Series: a more manual path
R-Series is less turnkey. You can view and track cards under Customers > Gift Cards, but the export is not as complete as X-Series.
Lightspeed's own migration guidance actually routes R-Series merchants to X-Series first. If your R-Series export does not give you a clean file of codes and balances, follow Lightspeed's R-Series to X-Series migration material, or contact Lightspeed support to get a full list of your gift cards with their current balances.
Drop zero-balance rows before you import
Lightspeed's own guidance is to delete rows with a 0.00 balance before importing them anywhere else. Do that here too. There is no reason to import spent cards, and it keeps your Shopify gift card list clean.
Which balance to import
Import each card's current remaining balance (the export's balance column), not the amount it was originally loaded with.
Check your codes
Import the gift card codes from the export. If any code falls outside Shopify's 8 to 20 letter-and-number rule, use the fresh-code workflow to reissue those cards and notify those customers.
Import into BatchCard
- In BatchCard, map the Lightspeed code column to Code and the balance column to Value.
- Review the mapping and validation results.
- Create the batch.
For the full walkthrough, see the import guide. The CSV and XLSX format reference documents the Code column and every other supported field.
