Common Questions
Quick answers to questions merchants ask most often.
Can I edit gift cards after creation?
No. Once a gift card is created in Shopify, the code and initial value cannot be changed. This is a Shopify limitation, not a BatchCard restriction.
You can adjust a gift card's balance in your Shopify admin (for example, to add or remove credit), but the original code stays the same.
If you need to fix a mistake on one card, disable that single gift card in your Shopify admin and create a new one. To turn off every card in a batch, deactivate the whole batch from the batch page instead, which requires the Starter plan or higher. See updating a whole batch.
What happens if I downgrade my plan?
Your existing gift cards and batches are preserved. Nothing is deleted.
When the lower plan's limits take effect depends on which plan you are moving to.
- Moving to a lower paid plan: The change starts at the beginning of your next billing period. You keep your current plan's features and card limit until then, so the time you already paid for is not lost. Your usage count starts fresh when the new plan begins.
- Moving to the Free plan: The change takes effect right away, and Shopify credits you for the unused time on your current period. Cards you created earlier in the same calendar month count toward the Free limit.
Once the lower plan is in force, features it does not include (such as email delivery on the Free plan, or scheduled delivery on the Starter plan) become unavailable for new batches.
See Plan Limits for a full feature comparison.
Can I delete a batch?
No. Batches cannot be deleted because the gift cards already exist in Shopify.
You can cancel a batch that is in progress or has pending deliveries, which stops any remaining work. Gift cards that were already created remain active in Shopify until something else changes them. To turn those cards off, deactivate the whole batch from the batch page, which requires the Starter plan or higher. See updating a whole batch.
To get a finished batch out of the way, archive it. Archiving hides the batch from your default batch list, and you can unarchive it at any time. It is available on every plan and changes nothing for your customers: the gift cards stay live in Shopify and reminders keep sending. See archiving a batch.
Is there an API?
There is no public API for batch creation or management. BatchCard's own screens run inside the Shopify admin.
The supported programmatic path is Shopify Flow, which requires the Pro plan or higher. The Create gift card for customer action creates a card as a step in any workflow, and the Batch completed and Gift card created triggers start Flow workflows when a batch finishes creating cards and when a gift card is created. Below Pro the action returns a clear message and creates no card, and neither trigger fires. See the Shopify Flow integration.
For bulk work, you can prepare a CSV file from your own systems and import it through the BatchCard interface.
Do gift cards expire?
This depends on your Shopify store settings, not BatchCard. Shopify allows you to set gift card expiration policies at the store level.
On the Pro plan and above, you can set an expiration date on the batch or per card via the Expiration Date column in your import file. If you leave the field blank, the card follows your store's default expiration policy. If your file includes an Expiration Date column on a plan without this feature, BatchCard tells you during import.
Some regions have laws that prohibit or limit gift card expiration. Check your local regulations before setting expiration dates.
Can I use BatchCard with multiple Shopify stores?
Yes, but each store requires a separate BatchCard installation. Install the app from the Shopify App Store on each store individually. Plans and billing are per store.
Where are my gift card codes stored?
Gift card codes are stored in two places:
- Shopify -- as native Shopify gift cards, visible in your Shopify admin under Products > Gift cards.
- BatchCard -- in your batch details, where you can view and export codes at any time.
Shopify only shows the last four characters of each code after creation. BatchCard captures the full code at the moment Shopify generates it, so you always have access to the complete code.
What payment methods are accepted?
BatchCard billing is handled through Shopify's built-in billing system. You pay for BatchCard through the same payment method you use for your Shopify subscription. No separate payment setup is needed.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. You can downgrade to the Free plan or uninstall BatchCard at any time from your Shopify admin. There are no cancellation fees or long-term contracts.
If you uninstall the app, your gift cards remain in Shopify. They are native Shopify gift cards and are not affected by removing BatchCard.
