Expiration Dates
Pro+BatchCard Expiration Dates let Shopify merchants set gift cards to expire on a specific date or after a duration from 1 month to 20 years, resolved to a fixed date at creation, with per-card overrides on spreadsheet import. Available on the Pro plan.
See the creating gift cards guide, learn how merchants use it for spreadsheet format reference, or read the gift card compliance and expiration laws.
Install Free on ShopifyPick a date or a duration
Choose a specific calendar date, or a duration: 5 years, 2 years, 1 year, or any custom length from 1 month to 20 years. A live preview shows the exact date your cards will expire before you create the batch.
Per-card control on import
Batch rule not enough? On spreadsheet imports, a per-row Expiration Date column overrides the batch setting, and blank rows inherit it. The file format never changes.
How It Works
Turn on expiration in the create form
Switch on Set expiration date when creating a batch, from the form or a spreadsheet import.
Choose a duration or a specific date
Pick a preset (5 years, 2 years, 1 year), enter a custom duration in months or years, or select an exact calendar date.
Check the live preview
BatchCard shows the exact expiration date your cards will get, calculated in your store's timezone, before you commit.
Create the batch
Every card carries the resolved date. Exports, reports, and expiration reminders treat it like any other expiration date.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Which plans include expiration dates?
- Expiration dates are included on Pro ($9.99/mo) and Business ($24.99/mo), for both the create form and spreadsheet imports.
- What durations can I set?
- Presets for 1, 2, and 5 years, plus any custom length from 1 month to 20 years. The duration resolves into a fixed calendar date at creation, so downstream tools and Shopify always see a normal expiration date.
- Are gift card expiration dates legal?
- It depends on where your customers are. US federal law requires gift cards to stay valid for at least 5 years, and some US states and Canadian provinces prohibit expiration entirely. BatchCard lists the 5-year preset first and shows a notice in the form, but confirming your local rules is your responsibility.
- Can rows in my spreadsheet override the batch setting?
- Yes. A per-row Expiration Date always wins over the batch rule, and rows without one inherit it. Existing files keep working without changes.
