How to Migrate Gift Cards to Shopify

Yes, you can migrate your existing gift cards to Shopify with their codes intact, as long as each code fits Shopify's format of 8 to 20 letters and numbers. Most gift card numbers from Square, Toast, Lightspeed, and Clover already do. Balances import as each card's current remaining value, not the original face value, so your gift card liability stays accurate. The one rule that matters most: deactivate the cards on your old platform first, then export and import, so a card cannot be redeemed on both systems at once.

The three things every migration depends on

Before the platform specifics, three rules apply no matter where you are coming from:

• Balance means current remaining value. Import what is left on each card, never the original load amount. Importing face value inflates your liability and turns a $12 card back into a $50 one.
• Deactivate the source first. Gift cards can be spent by anyone holding the code, so a card that is live on both your old platform and Shopify can be redeemed twice. Freeze or deactivate the old cards, then export at the moment of cutover.
• Codes carry over within Shopify's format. Codes are 8 to 20 letters and numbers, and spaces or dashes are cleaned automatically. Any code outside that range cannot be preserved. Those cards get a fresh code in BatchCard, and you notify those customers of the new code. Never assume every code transfers.

Migrating from Square

Square is the cleanest migration. Square gift card numbers are 16 numeric digits, so they carry over unchanged, and the Detail CSV export includes a "Current outstanding Amount" column that is exactly the remaining balance you import. Deactivate your Square cards first, then go to Reports, then Gift Cards, and export the Detail CSV.

Migrating from Toast

Toast works well, with one important detail: the day-to-day Gift Card Balances view masks card numbers. Use Toast's documented export for third-party use, which shows the full card numbers a migration needs. Select all columns before you download. Balances come from a live snapshot report, so export right at cutover. Toast numbers are numeric and usually fit Shopify's limit; any number longer than 20 digits gets a fresh code.

Migrating from Lightspeed

Lightspeed Retail comes in two products, and the export path differs. X-Series (formerly Vend) has a clean self-serve gift card report under Reporting, then Gift card reports, that includes codes, balances, and statuses. R-Series is the older product with a more manual export, and Lightspeed's own guidance routes R-Series merchants to X-Series first. Delete any rows with a 0.00 balance before importing so you do not carry dead cards.

Migrating from Clover

Clover's Outstanding Balance report has everything you need, including the gift card number and remaining balance. The one wrinkle is exporting full card numbers to a CSV: the on-screen report shows them, but a self-serve download may require the Columns settings or a request to Clover support. If you cannot export full numbers yourself, contact Clover support to request a full gift card list. Clover numbers are typically 16 numeric digits and fit Shopify's format.
